About the University
With approximately 20,000 students and seven faculties, the University of Potsdam, founded in 1991, is the largest university in Brandenburg. Its core faculties are the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the Faculty of Human Sciences, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, and the Faculty of Law. IT specialists are trained in the Faculty of Digital Engineering, which is jointly operated with the Hasso Plattner Institute. In addition, a Faculty of Health Sciences is operated in cooperation with the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg and the Brandenburg Medical School.
The University of Potsdam’s research focuses on cognitive sciences, evolutionary and systems biology, ecology, digital education, and materials research. There is also an interdisciplinary center that oversees teacher training and educational research.
The university maintains close ties with research institutions in Potsdam and the surrounding region. Its consistent internationalization strategy helps make Potsdam an attractive hub for young researchers from both Germany and abroad. In the Times Higher Education Ranking, it has consistently ranked among the top 300 universities worldwide for years. Potsdam Transfer, the university’s center for entrepreneurship and innovation, knowledge and technology transfer, ensures that innovations from research are translated into practical applications.
