Freie Universität Berlin is a young, international university with a unique history. It belongs to the five top-level universities in Germany. Since 2007, it is one of the few German universities labeled as University of Excellence by the German federal and State Excellence Initiative. As a sign of freedom at the onset of Cold War, the FU was founded with the help of student initiatives and international support in 1948. Since then, international impulses have shaped research and student life.
FU Berlin is one of Germany’s largest universities with about 31,500 students, 4,400 Ph.D. students and more than 490 professors. Freie Universität comprises twelve departments and four Central Institutes offering mohire than 180 academic programs in a wide range of disciplines. Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin is the joint medical department of Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. With the structured doctoral programs of Dahlem Research School, Freie Universität Berlin offers best conditions for the academic development of junior scholars and scientists.
FU Berlin has approximately 4,500 employees, almost half of them are research assistants. Furthermore, there are about 100 trainees. FU Berlin trains in 12 professions, for instance in administration, media- and information services, animal keeping, gardening, event management and in laboratories.
Job satisfaction and well-being of the employees is a primary concern of Freie Universität Berlin. Equal opportunities, human resources development, health promotion and work-life-balance are of great importance. In this regard, employees have a wide range of possibilities: advanced trainings in health promotion – some directly at the workplace – various sports courses as well as an emergency care for children of employees and students.
