The Internet of Things (IoT) led to many disruptive technologies and applications in domains such as smart home, autonomous driving, healthcare and natural disaster management. By 2020, the number of "things" that are interconnected will rise to 20 billion. Fog Computing is used to enable a user-centric approach, using "edge" devices to perform parts of the computation, storage or communication. Fog Computing is ideally suited to solve problems arising from processing millions of distributed sensor data. Within this research project a new system for this IoT environment is being developed. The focus is on the development of new methods and system aspects. Especially the distributed and volatile IoT environment is a source of promising research questions that will be addressed in this project. The goal of the project is to create a system that allows thousands of queries over millions of sensors. The tasks also include repository administration, system management and software quality assurance. The achieved results shall also be presented in contributions to international publications.
Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in the field of computer science, industrial engineering or business informatics. Ideally, you have in-depth knowledge of data management, distributed systems or scalable data analysis. In addition, we generally expect a keen interest in research activities and in the development of new systems. You should have experience in the areas of data processing, programming languages and compilers, machine learning, parallel computing and programming skills in C++. Further requirements are the ability to work in a team and excellent English language skills for working in our international team as well as the willingness to learn the German language.
