IFW Dres­den e.V. - Solid State and Mater­i­als Research

The Leib­niz Insti­tute for Solid State and Mater­i­als Research Dresden (IFW Dresden) is a non-uni­versity research insti­tute and a mem­ber of the Leib­niz Asso­ci­ation. The IFW employs approx­im­ately 600 people and one focus is on the train­ing of young sci­ent­ists besides enhan­cing fun­da­mental and ap-plied research devel­op­ment. At the highest inter­na­tional level, the IFW oper­ates mod­ern mater­i­als sci­ence on a sci­entific basis and makes the obtained res­ults use­ful for the eco­nomy. The com­plex and inter­dis­cip­lin­ary research work is car­ried out within the IFW by five sci­entific insti­tutes, which are sup­por­ted by a highly developed tech­nical infra­struc­ture. The pos­i­tion com­prises sci­entific stud­ies in the research area of the elec­tronic prop­er­ties of quantum mater­i­als, e.g.
  • Oper­a­tion and main­ten­ance of Se based MBE machine at Joint labor­at­ory Bessy II Ber­lin. Prepa-ration and ini­tial char­ac­ter­iz­a­tion of ultrathin films of novel mater­i­als with XPS, ARPES and LEED/RHEED.
  • High res­ol­u­tion PES, XAS char­ac­ter­iz­a­tion of novel mater­i­als using syn­chro­tron light source.


In cooper­a­tion with Helm­holtz-Zen­trum Ber­lin für Mater­i­alien und Ener­gie (HZB) the insti­tute for Solid State Research in the frame­works of the Joint research group for Pho­toe­mis­sion of Func­tional Quan-tum Mater­i­als at the IFW Dresden offers a

Post-Doc Pos­i­tion (m/f/d)

in full-time lim­ited to 24 months work­ing at Bessy II syn­chro­tron radi­ation source in Ber­lin.

As a suc­cess­ful can­did­ate (m/f/d) you should have:
  • Mas­ter’s degree or Dip­loma and an excel­lent doc­tor`s degree in Solid State Physic (or Solid state Chem­istry).
  • Research exper­i­ence in the field of elec­tronic prop­er­ties of cor­rel­ated elec­tron sys­tems or 2D (1D) elec­tron sys­tems as well as in the field of solid state spec­tro­scopy.
  • Research exper­i­ence in MBE / ALD ultra-high vacuum meth­ods for 2D sys­tems, pre­par­a­tion and ultra-high vacuum meth­ods for sur­face sci­ence invest­ig­a­tions using elec­tron spec­tro­scopy such as XPS, ARPES, RHEED / LEED and AES.
  • Strong per­sonal motiv­a­tion and very good Eng­lish skills.

What we of­fer:

The dur­a­tion of the con­tract is two years. The salary is accord­ing to the Ger­man tar­iff TV-L (EG 13,
100%, part-time is also pos­sible).
