As part of a joint project, a lab-scale plug flow reactor shall be described for anaerobic digestion of several biogenic raw and residual material. The focus of the work is the optimization of the hydrolysis, i.e. the enzymatic degradation of substrates. Operational modifications shall be investigated and optima shall be identified in order to narrow the obtained product spectrum and to shorten process times. By coupling with conventional reactors for anaerobic digestion for biogas production, the potential for increasing yields has to be investigated and projected onto the large scale. Various analytical methods for metabolome analysis, cell vitality and characterisation of substrate and its degradation will be applied. Together with the industrial cooperation partners, plans for the transfer of the developed technology to process scale will be carried out. A follow-up grant for implementation is envisaged.
Design of plug flow-based hydrolysis under different operating conditions and different process designs.
Investigation of the degradation effect of different substrates, additionally also in reference cultures in other laboratory bioreactors.
Physiological investigation of the microbial consortium.
Evaluation of process robustness and consideration of additional benefits for existing plants.
Support for scientific and public events within the framework of the project.
Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in the field of biotechnology with a focus on microbiology and engineering
Proven good knowledge:
a) in bioprocess engineering related to anaerobic bioreactor cultivations
b) in microbial metabolic pathways
c) in basic analytical methods for the determination of concentrations of primary and secondary metabolites
d) in the presentation of scientific results
Ideally, the candidate has experience in program designs for process control and device integration (Labview, etc.).
The candidate should be open-minded and have good language skills (conversational and technical) in German and English.
The willingness to actively participate in scientific events is a pre-requisite.
