Work­ing field:

As part of a joint pro­ject, a lab-scale plug flow reactor shall be described for anaer­obic diges­tion of sev­eral bio­genic raw and resid­ual mater­ial. The focus of the work is the optim­iz­a­tion of the hydro­lysis, i.e. the enzymatic degrad­a­tion of sub­strates. Oper­a­tional modi­fic­a­tions shall be invest­ig­ated and optima shall be iden­ti­fied in order to nar­row the obtained product spec­trum and to shorten pro­cess times. By coup­ling with con­ven­tional react­ors for anaer­obic diges­tion for bio­gas pro­duc­tion, the poten­tial for increas­ing yields has to be invest­ig­ated and pro­jec­ted onto the large scale. Vari­ous ana­lyt­ical meth­ods for meta­bolome ana­lysis, cell vital­ity and char­ac­ter­isa­tion of sub­strate and its degrad­a­tion will be applied. Together with the indus­trial cooper­a­tion part­ners, plans for the trans­fer of the developed tech­no­logy to pro­cess scale will be car­ried out. A fol­low-up grant for imple­ment­a­tion is envis­aged.
  • Design of plug flow-based hydro­lysis under dif­fer­ent oper­at­ing con­di­tions and dif­fer­ent pro­cess designs.
  • Invest­ig­a­tion of the degrad­a­tion effect of dif­fer­ent sub­strates, addi­tion­ally also in ref­er­ence cul­tures in other labor­at­ory biore­act­ors.
  • Physiolo­gical invest­ig­a­tion of the micro­bial con­sor­tium.
  • Eval­u­ation of pro­cess robust­ness and con­sid­er­a­tion of addi­tional bene­fits for exist­ing plants.
  • Sup­port for sci­entific and pub­lic events within the frame­work of the pro­ject.


  • Suc­cess­fully com­pleted uni­versity degree (Mas­ter, Dip­lom or equi­val­ent) in the field of bio­tech­no­logy with a focus on micro­bi­o­logy and engin­eer­ing
  • Proven good know­ledge:
a) in biopro­cess engin­eer­ing related to anaer­obic biore­actor cul­tiv­a­tions
b) in micro­bial meta­bolic path­ways
c) in basic ana­lyt­ical meth­ods for the determ­in­a­tion of con­cen­tra­tions of primary and sec­ond­ary meta­bol­ites
d) in the present­a­tion of sci­entific res­ults
  • Ideally, the can­did­ate has exper­i­ence in pro­gram designs for pro­cess con­trol and device integ­ra­tion (Lab­view, etc.).
  • The can­did­ate should be open-minded and have good lan­guage skills (con­ver­sa­tional and tech­nical) in Ger­man and Eng­lish.
  • The will­ing­ness to act­ively par­ti­cip­ate in sci­entific events is a pre-requis­ite.
