Junior Pro­fess­or­ship - salary grade W1

with W3 ten­ure-track option in the field of "Math­em­at­ics - Mod­el­ing, Sim­u­la­tion and Optimz­a­tion of Real World Pro­cesses".

With this pos­i­tion, TU Ber­lin espe­cially addresses and aims to pro­mote young sci­ent­ists. For that reason, this pos­i­tion will be a tem­por­ary W1 junior pro­fess­or­ship with an eval­u­ation after 3 years. In case of a second suc­cess­ful ten­ure-track eval­u­ation after 6 years, this pos­i­tion will lead to a per­man­ent W3 pro­fess­or­ship.

Work­ing field:

The pos­i­tion requires research and teach­ing in the area of math­em­at­ical mod­el­ing, sim­u­la­tion, and optim­iz­a­tion with a strong inter­dis­cip­lin­ary ori­ent­a­tion. The fol­low­ing research areas should be addressed:
  • Mod­el­ling with Dif­fer­en­tial Equa­tions
  • Model Reduc­tion
  • Multiscale and Inverse Prob­lems
  • Sparsity/Low Order Mod­el­ling
  • Data assim­il­a­tion

Teach­ing will be required in all math­em­at­ical degree pro­grams (includ­ing under­gradu­ate) and in the ser­vice teach­ing of math­em­at­ics for other pro­grams. Teach­ing oblig­a­tions must be met in Ger­man and Eng­lish. Can­did­ates are expec­ted to super­vise stu­dents’ theses on Bach­elor, Mas­ter and PhD level as well as to par­ti­cip­ate in the aca­demic admin­is­tra­tion of the uni­versity.


Suc­cess­ful applic­ants must ful­fill the require­ments for appoint­ment at the junior pro­fessor level in com­pli­ance with § 102a Ber­lHG (Ber­lin Higher Edu­ca­tion Act). These include a com­pleted aca­demic edu­ca­tion in math­em­at­ics or a com­par­able dis­cip­line, qual­i­fied achieve­ments in research (doc­tor­ate in math­em­at­ics) and ped­ago­gical-didactic qual­i­fic­a­tions, demon­strated by teach­ing exper­i­ence and visu­al­ized in a teach­ing port­fo­lio (for fur­ther inform­a­tion see TUB Web­site, quick access 144242).

We are look­ing for can­did­ates with an already inter­na­tion­ally vis­ible pro­file in the area of math­em­at­ical mod­el­ing, sim­u­la­tion, and optim­iz­a­tion with a strong inter­dis­cip­lin­ary ori­ent­a­tion and research res­ults that have been pub­lished in ref­er­eed journ­als. Exper­i­ence in rais­ing funds from national and inter­na­tional external sources and in col­lab­or­at­ive research pro­jects is desir­able.
The can­did­ate must rep­res­ent the area of math­em­at­ical mod­el­ing, sim­u­la­tion, and optim­iz­a­tion in research and teach­ing. Applic­ants must have some teach­ing exper­i­ence on uni­versity level as well as some addi­tional exper­i­ence in advising and super­vising Bach­elor, Mas­ter and doc­toral stu­dents. Exper­i­ence in aca­demic admin­is­tra­tion is desir­able.
The area of research expert­ise should allow co-oper­a­tions with the cur­rent pro­fess­ors at the Insti­tute of Math­em­at­ics as well as par­ti­cip­a­tion in cur­rent and future col­lab­or­at­ive research activ­it­ies, such as CRC 1029 “TurbIn”, CRC 910 “Con­trol of self-organ­iz­ing non­lin­ear sys­tems: The­or­et­ical meth­ods and con­cepts of applic­a­tion”, CRC/TRR 109 “Dis­cret­iz­a­tion in Geo­metry und Dynam­ics” or CRC/TRR 154 “Math­em­at­ical Mod­el­ing, Sim­u­la­tion and Optim­iz­a­tion at the Example of Gas Net­works” respect­ively fur­ther col­lab­or­at­ive pro­jects. Act­ive par­ti­cip­a­tion in the “Ber­lin Inter­na­tional Gradu­ate School in Model and Sim­u­la­tion based Research” (BIMoS) and the Ber­lin Math­em­at­ical School (BMS) will be expec­ted.
